CENTRAL PARK

Gapstow Bridge

A stone arch bridge over a small natural pond at the park's southeast corner — and the source of the single most-reproduced skyline view in Central Park. Midtown Manhattan rises behind the bridge in a frame that appears on more postcards and travel photographs than any other image in the park.

ABOUT

Why visit

Gapstow Bridge

The stone arch over The Pond at the park's southeast corner frames the single most-reproduced skyline view in Central Park: Midtown Manhattan's towers rising behind a small natural pond with the stone arch in the foreground. Built in 1896 from locally-quarried Manhattan schist. Featured in Home Alone 2 as the bridge where Kevin meets the Pigeon Lady. The best photography angle is standing on the southeast bank of The Pond looking northwest, with the bridge framing the Plaza Hotel and midtown towers behind it. Enter at 59th/60th Street and 5th Avenue. Open 24 hours. Free. Best shots: dawn or dusk.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Any time — the statue is in a sheltered spot off the main path and rarely crowded. Morning light from the east hits the bronze well.

LOCAL GUIDE INSIDER TIP

Don't stand on the bridge for the photo — stand on the southeast bank of The Pond and shoot back toward the bridge with the Plaza Hotel and midtown towers behind it. That's the actual postcard shot. Standing on the bridge gets you a photo of the park, not the iconic frame.
